Gina Ortiz Jones was raised by a single mother, who came to the United States because she believed in the promise of a better future and limitless opportunities. Their road wasn’t always easy and Gina knows first-hand what it is like to live in subsidized housing and rely on reduced lunch as a kid. She learned early that it takes both hard work and opportunity to get ahead.
After graduating from Boston University, on a four year R.O.T.C. scholarship, she was commissioned as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Air Force, and served in Iraq under the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. Returning home to San Antonio following deployment to help care for her mother who was fighting cancer.
Over the past 14 years, Gina has built a career in national security, with a particular focus on defense intelligence and economic security. She knew she could not stand by as the national security and opportunities she has spent her career protecting are threatened, even as her own community was being represented by someone who is a rubber stamp for the current administration’s policies. So now Gina is stepping up to serve her country and her community once again, in Congress.
